Chapter 2: Lavell

February 20th, 2010

Another lonely day in marriage, another lonesome bedroom I return to. This empty relationship routine begins getting colder with each thought that passes my mind. Who wants to be in a relationship, let alone a marriage, like this? What’s the benefit of loving and desiring to be with someone who barely acknowledges your existence?

I walk through the messy, unkempt house. The combination of four kids—that aren’t even mine—and the frequent, unannounced popup visits from her drug and liquor using, rowdy family members in wee- hours of the morning keep the house dirty.

The kitchen is the place where it all goes down. Old food remains from days ago, and ketchup stains the counters. These people are so careless. Nah, fuck that, these people are just plain old trifling. Garbage bag in hand, I begin raking all the old food products left on the round wooden kitchen table into the bag. I do the same to the counter. I hear the door being kicked wide open, and the door knob bangs against the wall. I go see who it is this time, busting in my house like they ain’t got no damn sense. Walking around the corner, I see her, my wife. She just stands there, staring at me as if she has something on her mind.

“Kesha, what’s wrong?” I ask, but she says nothing as she walks up to me. She grabs me by the collar of my shirt and walks me down the hallway into the bedroom. She does it so forcefully and so demandingly. But that’s the type of woman she is. “Key, would you tell me what’s wrong?” I call her by the pet name I always call her. She just sits on the bed, taking of her socks and shoes.

“Lavell, now I know we been going through a lot. Shit, matter a fact, we been going through hell. But that don’t mean that I don’t think about you the way I used to.” At this time she’s unfastening her pants, taking off one pants leg at a time. “But even after all the lies and the rumors and the separations and the…well, ‘new friends’ you were never far at all.”

“Kesha, I—”

“Shh,” she shushes me, cutting me off. “Please, just listen.” Now her pants are completely off. I’m thinking she’s going to toss the covers over her like she always does before she takes one of her daily naps, but she doesn’t, she just sits there. “You’re a good provider in this household, and I thank you for that. I mean, I love that about you. You always make sure everyone’s well taken care of in here.”

“Baby, what are you saying?”

“What I’m saying is I still think about us, and I was wondering if you can take care of one more thing for me.” She reaches for the brim of her panties, scooching them down, little by little, one side then the other. I begin to feel a hardening in my pants.

“What’s that, baby?”
